The School is to Move

In March, 1940, the Education Board added the replacement of the Stratford School (Fenton Street) to their list of projected works. In 1937 the Health Department had condemned the classrooms on the southern side of the site. Although alterations were suggested, public feeling was running high. So, in 1938 the Prime minister, Rt Hon. M. J. Savage was conducted over the school by the School Committee. The Stratford Borough Council offered to exchange a portion of King Edward Park for the school site, and in 1942 they received plans for the proposed school on the Regan Street site. The exchange for the Fenton Street section for the 14 ½ acres of King Edward Park was arranged.

On March 21, 1948 the school on Regan Street was officially opened by the Minister of Education, the Hon. T.H. Coombs, after the ten years buildings had originally been condemned!

The School Dental Clinic

In March, 1928 the first Dental Nurse was appointed to the Technical School in Cloton Road. She was given a room in the school by the Education Department, who also paid her wages. Although the School Committee supplied the facilities, the running expenses had to be paid by the parents by donations. All restorative work was done by ‘pedal drill’. (In 1925 the National statistics revealed that there were 73 extractions for every 100 fillings.)

In February 1949, the new Dental clinic was opened at the present school site. There were three electric ‘B’ type units. By 1950 there were five Nurses working in a Clinic originally built for three, and they were five years in arrears.

In 1978 the present three nurse Clinic was opened on its present site to the North of the old Clinic, which became the Speech Clinic.
